Day 16: Mount Cook - Hooker Valley

Day 16 - Wednesday 06 March – Walk up to the Hooker Glacier

We had a lie in until 7:15 am! Our breakfast was at The Hermitage hotel. It's quite a posh Hotel that now owns the hotel that we were actually staying in. The breakfast was lovely and afterwards we went to The Visitors Centre where I bought peaked hat with a sun guard on the neck. It's so hot today and you do have to be careful.

We decided to walk up the Hooker Valley Track to the Hooker glacier lake directly under Mount Cook and we had our sandwich lunch there. Lots of other people were walking that path too. The walk included 3 suspension footbridges that didn't fail to impress (or fail to make you wobble as you swayed from side to side while walking on them!). Very clever engineering.

The walk was about 10 miles over stony path on a constant incline heading up toward the glacier on the way there, and then downhill all the way back. It was absolutely beautiful. In the evening we met up with the rest of the group and had some sparkling wine, got told off by the hotel manager for bringing our own wine onto the hotel premises, and took photos of all of us. After dinner Jeff and Stephen played doubles in some games of pool against some young men from Uruguay. The UK beat Uruguay 3 games to nil as I carefully selected the most intimidating rock anthems I could find, on the jukebox ha ha. It was all good fun though.
